Online Vocational Schools

Deer Isle ME student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become more attractive with Deer Isle ME students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. Although learning online is a readily available and practical way to acquire a certificate or degree, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For instance, training to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be appropriate for online training, such as learning driving and safety guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will blend online instruction with on campus practical training, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to ask before enrolling in an online program for any vocation if there is a suitable amount of practical training allocated to the curriculum. One way to help establish est that a trade school program is both suitable for online education and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for online training, it can be a practical way for individuals with time constraints to acquire a new trade.

What to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Deer Isle ME trade schoolsAfter you have picked the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you would like to attain, either on campus or online, you can start to decrease your selection of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are many technical schools in the  Deer Isle ME area and throughout the USA to pick from. That’s why it is imperative to have a list of important qualifications when making school assessments. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will undoubtedly be the first two aspects you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you need to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Deer Isle ME area technical programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Confirm that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you acquire an excellent education, it may assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Also, some states require that the  training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help measure the quality of a trade school near Deer Isle ME is how long it has been in operation. A poorly rated or a fly by night school normally will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so use it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate might signify that students were disappointed with the course and dropped out. It could also indicate that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help students secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Deer Isle ME area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many training programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with Deer Isle ME area companies in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by supplying practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the tech you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Deer Isle ME company if they can provide some tips. Also keep in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Speak to a few of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Maine and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Deer Isle ME, verify that the programs you are considering offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.
