Vocational Schools Online

Schriever LA student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Schriever LA students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. Even though learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For instance, training to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be appropriate for online education, such as learning driving and safety guidelines for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will blend online education with on-campus lab work, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to ask before enrolling in an online program for any trade if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training devoted to the course of study. One means to help establish est that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online learning and delivers comprehensive practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for online training, it can be a practical way for those with limited time to acquire a new vocation.

Questions to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Schriever LA trade schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the trade and type of certificate or degree that you would like to acquire, either online or on campus, you can begin to narrow down your list of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are a large number of vocational schools in the  Schriever LA area and throughout the Country to pick from. That’s why it is very important to have a list of key qualifiers when making school comparisons. As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the initial two factors you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you should explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Schriever LA area trade programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Make sure that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you acquire a superior education, it may help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, many states require that the  training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help evaluate the quality of a trade school near Schriever LA is how long it has been in operation. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school normally will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to start from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate might indicate that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It might also mean that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help students obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Schriever LA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most training programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Schriever LA area contractors in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the tech you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Schriever LA company if they can provide some suggestions. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Talk to some of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Louisiana and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Schriever LA, verify that the programs you are reviewing provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.
