Online Vocational Schools

Marrero LA student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become more attractive with Marrero LA students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. Even though online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a certificate or degree, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For instance, training to drive a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be appropriate for online learning, for example studying safety and driving regulations for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will blend online instruction with on campus lab work, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to ask before choosing an online school for any vocation if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training devoted to the curriculum. One means to help establish est that a trade school program is both suitable for online education and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for individuals with limited time to acquire a new vocation.

What to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Marrero LA trade schoolsAfter you have decided on the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you desire to obtain, either online or on campus, you can begin to decrease your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are many vocational schools in the  Marrero LA area and across the United States to select from. That’s why it is imperative to have a checklist of relevant qualifications when making school comparisons. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will undoubtedly be the first two factors you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you will want to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Marrero LA area technical schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Verify that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you receive a quality education, it can assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Also, a number of states require that the  training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help evaluate the quality of a vocational school near Marrero LA is how long it has been in operation. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the top schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate may indicate that students were dissatisfied with the course and dropped out. It could also suggest that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help students acquire apprenticeships or employment in the Marrero LA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous vocational programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or labor unions. Check if the schools you are considering have working relationships with Marrero LA area companies in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by furnishing practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the specialist you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Marrero LA contractor if they can give you some tips. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there might be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Speak to several of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Louisiana and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Marrero LA, check that the schools you are looking at provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.

    Marrero, Louisiana

Marrero is a census-designated place (CDP) in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. Marrero is on the south side (referred to as the "West Bank") of the Mississippi River, within the New Orleans–Metairie–Kenner Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 33,141 at the 2010 census.[1]

Marrero was named in honor of the Louisiana politician and founder of Marrero Land Company, Louis H. Marrero. The area was originally referred to and shown on maps as "Amesville", after the Boston businessman Oakes Ames, who purchased much of the land following the Civil War. In February 1916, the U.S. Postmaster officially changed the name of the Post Office to "Marrero".[2]

Louis Herman Marrero was born in Adams County, Mississippi, on July 17, 1847. When he was a child his family moved to St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana. During his school years at Jackson, Louisiana, the Civil War began, and Marrero joined Captain Scott's Command, later known as the 25th Louisiana Regiment.[3]
