Learning a Vocation Online

Jennings LA student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become more attractive with Jennings LA students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. While online learning is a readily available and practical way to earn a certificate or degree, it might not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For instance, training to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be suitable for online learning, for instance studying safety and driving regulations for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Many programs will blend online education with on-campus lab work, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to find out before choosing an online program for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of practical training devoted to the curriculum. One means to help establish est that a trade school program is both appropriate for online education and delivers in-depth practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for online training, it can be a convenient way for individuals with limited time to learn a new profession.

Concerns to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Jennings LA trade schoolsOnce you have chosen the trade and type of degree or certificate that you desire to acquire, either online or on campus, you can start to narrow down your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are many trade schools in the  Jennings LA area and all over the United States to select from. That’s why it is very important to have a list of important qualifiers when making school comparisons. As earlier stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the first 2 variables you will consider. Following are several additional ones that you need to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Jennings LA area trade programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Verify that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you get a superior education, it may help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited programs. Also, many states require that the  training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help measure the quality of a trade school near Jennings LA is how long it has been in operation. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the top schools had to begin from their first day of training, so use it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate may suggest that students were unhappy with the program and quit. It may also signify that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which can produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist students secure apprenticeships or employment in the Jennings LA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of training programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have referring relationships with Jennings LA area professionals in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the specialist you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Jennings LA company if they can provide some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Speak to some of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Louisiana and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Jennings LA, verify that the schools you are considering provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family emergencies.

Jennings McComb, for whom the town was named, was an Irish contractor of the Southern Pacific Railroad. He built the Jennings depot on a divide peculiar to southwest Louisiana. This became the center of new development based on the railroad. The first settler was recorded as A. D. McFarlain, who came in 1881 from St. Mary Parish and opened a store. McFarlain also became the first rice grower, postmaster, brick maker, and builder in the community. Prospering with Jennings’ growth, McFarlain was considered one of the town’s prominent businessmen and civic leaders.
