Online Trade Schools

Jefferson LA student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Jefferson LA students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. Although learning online is a readily available and practical way to acquire a degree or certificate, it may not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, learning to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be suitable for online training, for instance learning safety and driving guidelines for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will blend online education with on campus lab work, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to determine before choosing an online program for any vocation if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training devoted to the curriculum. One way to help establish est that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online education and delivers comprehensive practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for online training, it can be a convenient way for those with limited time to learn a new profession.

What to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Jefferson LA trade schoolsOnce you have picked the trade and type of certificate or degree that you would like to acquire, either on campus or online, you can start to narrow down your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are a large number of vocational schools in the  Jefferson LA area and across the Country to select from. That’s why it is essential to have a checklist of key qualifiers when making school assessments. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the initial 2 variables you will consider. Following are some additional ones that you should research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Jefferson LA area technical programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Make certain that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you obtain a quality education, it may help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited schools. Additionally, a number of states mandate that the  training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help measure the quality of a vocational school near Jefferson LA is how long it has been in operation. A negatively ranked or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the top schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate may suggest that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It could also suggest that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Jefferson LA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous trade programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have working partnerships with Jefferson LA area specialists in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing practical training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the tech you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Jefferson LA company if they can provide some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Talk to several of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Louisiana and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Jefferson LA, check that the programs you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family issues.
