Online Vocational Schools

Des Allemands LA student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Des Allemands LA students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. While learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be appropriate for online learning, for example studying driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will incorporate online instruction with on campus lab work, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to determine before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training devoted to the syllabus. One means to help establish est that a trade school program is both appropriate for online learning and provides comprehensive practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for online training, it can be a convenient way for students with limited time to learn a new trade.

Things to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Des Allemands LA trade schoolsWhen you have picked the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, either online or on campus, you can begin to decrease your list of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are a large number of technical schools in the  Des Allemands LA area and across the Country to choose from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a list of key qualifications when making school assessments. As formerly mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the initial 2 variables you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you should investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Des Allemands LA area trade schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Verify that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you acquire a quality education, it may help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Also, a number of states mandate that the  training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help assess the quality of a vocational school near Des Allemands LA is how long it has been in business. A poorly rated or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to begin from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate might suggest that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It may also signify that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which can mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help grads acquire apprenticeships or employment in the Des Allemands LA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of training programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or labor unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Des Allemands LA area professionals in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the tech you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Des Allemands LA company if they can give you some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Speak to several of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Louisiana and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Des Allemands LA, verify that the programs you are looking at offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.
