Learning a Trade Online

Bienville LA student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become more attractive with Bienville LA students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. While learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a certificate or degree, it might not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For instance, training to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be suitable for online education, such as studying driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Some programs will combine online education with on-campus lab work, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to ask before choosing an online program for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of practical training allocated to the curriculum. One means to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online education and delivers in-depth practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for online training, it can be a practical way for individuals with limited time to learn a new vocation.

What to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Bienville LA trade schoolsAfter you have selected the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you want to earn, either on campus or online, you can begin to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are many trade schools in the  Bienville LA area and all over the United States to select from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a list of relevant qualifiers when making school evaluations. As formerly stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the first two aspects you will consider. Following are some additional ones that you will want to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Bienville LA area technical schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Confirm that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you obtain a superior education, it can assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Also, many states mandate that the  training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help assess the quality of a trade school near Bienville LA is how long it has been in business. A poorly rated or a fly by night school usually will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate could signify that students were dissatisfied with the course and quit. It could also mean that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help grads secure apprenticeships or employment in the Bienville LA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most training programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of businesses or trade unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have referring relationships with Bienville LA area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the technician you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Bienville LA contracting company if they can provide some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Speak to a few of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Louisiana and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Bienville LA, check that the programs you are reviewing offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.

    Bienville Parish, Louisiana

Bienville Parish (French: Paroisse de Bienville) is a parish located in the northwestern portion of the U.S. state of Louisiana. As of the 2010 census, the population was 14,353.[2] The parish seat is Arcadia.[3]

The highest natural point in Louisiana, a hill known as Mt. Driskill, 535 feet (163 m) in elevation, is located in north central Bienville Parish. The mountain is located on private land with public access by walking trail. It is named for James Christopher Driskill, a 19th-century landowner. Nearby is Jordan Mountain, with an elevation of 493 feet (150 m).

In the 1830s, Ruben Drake moved his family from South Carolina to what he named Mount Lebanon, the first permanent settlement in the parish. As the Drakes were devout Baptists, they established a church and school, which evolved into Mount Lebanon University, the forerunner of Louisiana College in Pineville in Rapides Parish in Central Louisiana.[4]
