Online Trade Schools

Lebanon Junction KY student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become more attractive with Lebanon Junction KY students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. While learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a certificate or degree, it might not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For instance, learning to drive a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be suitable for online learning, such as learning driving and safety guidelines for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Some programs will incorporate online education with on campus practical training, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to ask before choosing an online program for any trade if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training devoted to the syllabus. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both suitable for online studying and provides comprehensive practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for online training, it can be a convenient way for individuals with limited time to acquire a new trade.

Things to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Lebanon Junction KY trade schoolsAfter you have picked the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you desire to acquire, either on campus or online, you can start to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are numerous trade schools in the  Lebanon Junction KY area and all over the USA to choose from. That’s why it is essential to have a checklist of key qualifiers when making school evaluations. As formerly stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the initial 2 factors you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you will want to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Numerous Lebanon Junction KY area technical schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Confirm that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you get a quality education, it can help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited programs. Additionally, a number of states require that the  training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help evaluate the quality of a trade school near Lebanon Junction KY is how long it has been in business. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to start from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate may suggest that students were disappointed with the course and dropped out. It may also indicate that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist grads obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Lebanon Junction KY area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of training programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Lebanon Junction KY area contractors in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the technician you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Lebanon Junction KY contractor if they can provide some suggestions. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Talk with several of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Kentucky and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Lebanon Junction KY, confirm that the schools you are comparing offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.
