Learning a Trade Online

Germantown KY student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Germantown KY students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. While learning online is a readily available and practical way to earn a certificate or degree, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, learning to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be suitable for online learning, for example studying safety and driving regulations for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Many programs will incorporate online instruction with on-campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to determine before choosing an online program for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of practical training allocated to the syllabus. One way to help establish est that a vocational school program is both suitable for online studying and provides in-depth practical training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for training online, it can be a practical way for those with limited time to learn a new vocation.

Things to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Germantown KY trade schoolsOnce you have decided on the trade and type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, either online or on campus, you can begin to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are a large number of technical schools in the  Germantown KY area and throughout the Country to pick from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a checklist of important qualifiers when making school assessments. As earlier stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will undoubtedly be the initial 2 factors you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you should research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Germantown KY area trade programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Make sure that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you receive a quality education, it can help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, many states mandate that the  training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help measure the quality of a vocational school near Germantown KY is how long it has been in operation. A negatively ranked or a fly by night school normally will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to begin from their first day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate could signify that students were unhappy with the course and dropped out. It may also signify that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which may produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Germantown KY area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many technical programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or labor unions. Check if the schools you are considering have working relationships with Germantown KY area professionals in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by providing practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the technician you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Germantown KY company if they can provide some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there can be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak to some of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Kentucky and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Germantown KY, confirm that the schools you are looking at offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family emergencies.
