new skills training sign Burlington KYDeciding to begin a new profession and enroll in a vocational school near Burlington KY are serious decisions that will profoundly influence your future career. But with numerous trade schools to select from, just how do you go about identifying the best one? Not only do you need to make certain that you will get the comprehensive training needed to be successful in your new occupation, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. Some potential students make the error of enrolling in a vocational school just because the campus is nearest to their home or where the work. Others might be attracted to the school that has the lowest tuition. Naturally the location and cost of the programs are significant factors when assessing trade school options, but they must not be the only ones. Added considerations including accreditation and the reputation of the schools are critical also. So before you begin evaluating and comparing trade schools, you must know what questions to ask in order to get the information to make a final selection. We will review several of those questions shortly in this article. But to start with, let’s talk about a few of the vocation options that are available including the availability of online schools.

Online Trade Schools

Burlington KY student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become more attractive with Burlington KY students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. Although learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For instance, learning to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be appropriate for online classes, for instance learning safety and driving regulations for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will combine online education with on-campus practical training, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is crucial to determine before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of practical training allocated to the curriculum. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online studying and delivers comprehensive hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for online training, it can be a convenient way for individuals with limited time to acquire a new vocation.

Questions to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Burlington KY trade schoolsAfter you have chosen the trade and type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, either on campus or online, you can start to narrow down your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are many vocational schools in the  Burlington KY area and throughout the USA to pick from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a list of important qualifications when making school comparisons. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will undoubtedly be the first two variables you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you will want to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Numerous Burlington KY area technical schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Make sure that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you get an excellent education, it may help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited schools. Additionally, a number of states mandate that the  training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help assess the quality of a trade school near Burlington KY is how long it has been in business. A poorly rated or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to start from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate might indicate that students were unhappy with the course and dropped out. It might also mean that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Burlington KY area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of vocational programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or trade unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have referring relationships with Burlington KY area professionals in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Burlington KY contractor if they can give you some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Talk to a few of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Kentucky and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Burlington KY, verify that the programs you are comparing offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family issues.
