Learning a Trade Online

Vermillion KS student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Vermillion KS students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. While online learning is a readily available and practical way to acquire a degree or certificate, it may not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For example, training to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training can be appropriate for online learning, such as learning driving and safety regulations for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will combine online instruction with on-campus lab work, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to ask before choosing an online school for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of practical training allocated to the curriculum. One means to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online learning and delivers comprehensive practical training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a convenient way for individuals with limited time to learn a new vocation.

Questions to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Vermillion KS trade schoolsAfter you have picked the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you desire to acquire, either on campus or online, you can begin to limit your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are a large number of vocational schools in the  Vermillion KS area and all over the USA to select from. That’s why it is imperative to have a list of important qualifiers when making school comparisons. As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the initial 2 factors you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you need to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Vermillion KS area trade schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Verify that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you get a quality education, it can help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, many states mandate that the  training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help evaluate the quality of a vocational school near Vermillion KS is how long it has been in business. A poorly rated or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to begin from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate may indicate that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It might also signify that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which may produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates acquire apprenticeships or employment in the Vermillion KS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous trade programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or trade unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Vermillion KS area professionals in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by supplying practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the technician you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Vermillion KS contracting company if they can give you some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there might be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Speak to a few of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Kansas and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Vermillion KS, verify that the programs you are considering offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family responsibilities.
