Trade Schools Online

Silver Lake KS student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become more attractive with Silver Lake KS students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. Although online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a certificate or degree, it might not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For instance, learning to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be suitable for online education, for example studying driving and safety guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will blend online instruction with on campus lab work, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to ask before choosing an online school for any trade if there is a suitable amount of practical training devoted to the course of study. One means to help establish est that a trade school program is both suitable for online learning and provides in-depth hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for those with limited time to learn a new profession.

What to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Silver Lake KS trade schoolsAfter you have selected the trade and type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, either online or on campus, you can start to limit your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are many trade schools in the  Silver Lake KS area and throughout the United States to choose from. That’s why it is imperative to have a list of relevant qualifiers when making school comparisons. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the initial 2 factors you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you need to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Silver Lake KS area vocational programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Confirm that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you acquire a quality education, it can help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited programs. Additionally, some states mandate that the  training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help assess the quality of a vocational school near Silver Lake KS is how long it has been in operation. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school normally will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate might suggest that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It might also indicate that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help graduates secure apprenticeships or employment in the Silver Lake KS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many vocational programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of businesses or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with Silver Lake KS area specialists in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by providing hands-on training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the tech you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Silver Lake KS contractor if they can give you some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Speak with some of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Kansas and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Silver Lake KS, check that the schools you are looking at provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.
