Learning a Trade Online

Sharon KS student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become more attractive with Sharon KS students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. Even though online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a degree or certificate, it may not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For example, learning to operate a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that have to be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be suitable for online classes, for instance studying safety and driving guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will incorporate online instruction with on campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is crucial to find out before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training devoted to the syllabus. One means to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online education and delivers in-depth practical training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for students with time constraints to acquire a new trade.

What to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Sharon KS trade schoolsOnce you have picked the trade and type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, either online or on campus, you can start to decrease your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are many vocational schools in the  Sharon KS area and across the Country to choose from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a checklist of key qualifications when making school assessments. As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will probably be the initial two factors you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you will want to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Sharon KS area technical schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for instance HVAC technology. Verify that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you receive a superior education, it can help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, many states mandate that the  training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help measure the quality of a vocational school near Sharon KS is how long it has been in operation. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to start from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate could signify that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It could also signify that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s also important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Sharon KS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most technical programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of businesses or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have referring relationships with Sharon KS area companies in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the tech you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Sharon KS company if they can give you some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there might be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk to several of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Kansas and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Sharon KS, verify that the schools you are considering provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family issues.
