Not only do you have to ascertain that you will get the complete training necessary to be successful in your new profession, but also that the school is reputable and well regarded. A number of prospective students make the error of enrolling in a vocational school simply because the campus is closest to their home or place of employment. Others may be attracted to the one that charges the lowest tuition. Of course the cost and location of the programs are critical factors when evaluating trade school options, but they can not be the sole ones. Additional factors including accreditation and the reputation of the schools are critical as well. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions to ask in order to get the information to make a final selection. We will cover a few of those questions later in this article. But first, let’s look at a few of the trade options that are available including the accessibility of online schools.

Learning a Vocation Online

Russell KS student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Russell KS students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. Although learning online is a readily available and practical way to obtain a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, learning to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be suitable for online classes, such as learning safety and driving regulations for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will combine online instruction with on-campus practical training, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to ask before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training devoted to the syllabus. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online education and provides in-depth practical training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for online training, it can be a practical way for those with time constraints to acquire a new trade.

Things to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Russell KS trade schoolsOnce you have picked the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, either on campus or online, you can start to decrease your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are a large number of trade schools in the  Russell KS area and across the USA to select from. That’s why it is essential to have a list of relevant qualifications when making school assessments. As formerly stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the first two aspects you will consider. Following are several additional ones that you will want to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Numerous Russell KS area trade schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Confirm that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you receive a quality education, it can assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, some states mandate that the  training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help assess the quality of a trade school near Russell KS is how long it has been in operation. A negatively ranked or a fly by night school usually will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to begin from their first day of training, so use it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate might indicate that students were disappointed with the program and quit. It could also signify that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help grads secure apprenticeships or employment in the Russell KS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most trade programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or trade unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with Russell KS area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Russell KS company if they can give you some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Speak with a few of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Kansas and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Russell KS, confirm that the schools you are looking at offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family issues.

In 1865, the Butterfield Overland Despatch established a short-lived station named Fossil Creek Station along its route from Atchison, Kansas to Denver near the site of modern Russell. In 1867, the Kansas Pacific Railway reached the area and built its own station, also named Fossil Creek, later just Fossil, north of the Butterfield station. That same year, the Kansas Legislature established the surrounding area as Russell County. In 1871, colonists from Ripon, Wisconsin established a permanent settlement at Fossil Station, renaming it Russell after the county.[7] Russell was incorporated and named the provisional county seat in 1872, and, after a two-year dispute with neighboring Bunker Hill, it became the permanent county seat in 1874.[8][9] In 1876, Volga Germans, mostly from the area around Saratov and Samara in Russia, began settling in and around Russell.[10]

The first discovery oil well in Russell County was drilled west of Russell in 1923. An oil boom ensued and lasted through the 1930s, attracting settlers from Oklahoma and Texas. Petroleum production became a staple of the local economy.[11]

Russell came to national attention in the mid-1990s as the hometown of U.S. Senators Bob Dole and Arlen Specter when both men campaigned for the U.S. presidency.[12] Dole was born and raised in Russell, and it remained his official place of residence throughout his political career.[13]
