Online Trade Schools

Riverton KS student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Riverton KS students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. Even though online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For instance, training to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be appropriate for online education, for example studying driving and safety regulations for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will blend online instruction with on campus lab work, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to ask before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training devoted to the course of study. One way to help establish est that a trade school program is both appropriate for online learning and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for online training, it can be a practical way for those with time constraints to learn a new trade.

What to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Riverton KS trade schoolsOnce you have chosen the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you wish to attain, either on campus or online, you can start to limit your selection of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are many trade schools in the  Riverton KS area and throughout the United States to choose from. That’s why it is very important to have a checklist of relevant qualifications when making school comparisons. As formerly mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the initial two factors you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you will want to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Numerous Riverton KS area vocational programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Verify that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you receive a superior education, it may assist in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Also, many states mandate that the  training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help measure the quality of a vocational school near Riverton KS is how long it has been in operation. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to begin from their first day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate might suggest that students were dissatisfied with the course and quit. It might also suggest that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist students acquire apprenticeships or employment in the Riverton KS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many training programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or trade unions. Check if the schools you are considering have working relationships with Riverton KS area specialists in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by supplying practical training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Riverton KS contractor if they can provide some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Speak to several of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Kansas and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Riverton KS, confirm that the schools you are comparing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family emergencies.
