Online Trade Schools

Protection KS student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become more attractive with Protection KS students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. Although learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a degree or certificate, it may not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For example, training to operate a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be appropriate for online learning, for instance learning safety and driving guidelines for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will combine online instruction with on campus lab work, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is crucial to ask before enrolling in an online program for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of practical training allocated to the syllabus. One means to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online education and delivers in-depth hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for online training, it can be a practical way for individuals with time constraints to learn a new trade.

Things to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Protection KS trade schoolsAfter you have selected the trade and type of certificate or degree that you want to attain, either on campus or online, you can start to narrow down your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are many vocational schools in the  Protection KS area and across the United States to pick from. That’s why it is imperative to have a checklist of key qualifications when making school evaluations. As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will probably be the first 2 factors you will consider. Following are some additional ones that you will want to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Numerous Protection KS area trade schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Confirm that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you get a quality education, it may assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, many states require that the  training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help evaluate the quality of a vocational school near Protection KS is how long it has been in business. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school usually will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the top schools had to begin from their first day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate may suggest that students were unhappy with the course and dropped out. It may also suggest that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which may result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist students obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Protection KS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of trade programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Protection KS area professionals in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by furnishing practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the specialist you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Protection KS contractor if they can provide some tips. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Speak with a few of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Kansas and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Protection KS, check that the schools you are reviewing provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family issues.
