Learning a Vocation Online

Norcatur KS student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Norcatur KS students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. Even though learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a degree or certificate, it may not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For instance, training to operate a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be suitable for online training, such as studying safety and driving guidelines for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Some programs will incorporate online instruction with on campus practical training, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is crucial to find out before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is an adequate amount of practical training devoted to the syllabus. One means to help establish est that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online studying and delivers in-depth hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for those with time constraints to learn a new vocation.

Things to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Norcatur KS trade schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the trade and type of degree or certificate that you desire to obtain, either online or on campus, you can start to limit your selection of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are numerous trade schools in the  Norcatur KS area and across the USA to choose from. That’s why it is essential to have a checklist of important qualifiers when making school comparisons. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will probably be the first 2 factors you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you need to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Norcatur KS area technical schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Make sure that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you receive an excellent education, it can help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, a number of states mandate that the  training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help determine the quality of a trade school near Norcatur KS is how long it has been in business. A negatively rated or a fly by night school normally will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to begin from their first day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate might indicate that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It may also indicate that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Norcatur KS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many technical programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of businesses or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have referring partnerships with Norcatur KS area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the tech you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Norcatur KS contracting company if they can provide some tips. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there can be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Speak to a few of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Kansas and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Norcatur KS, verify that the schools you are considering provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.
