However with so many vocational schools to pick from, exactly how do you undertake locating the ideal one? Not only do you need to make sure that you will receive the extensive training needed to be successful in your new profession, but also that the school is reputable and well regarded. Many prospective students make the mistake of choosing a trade school just because the campus is nearest to their residence or where the work. Or they might gravitate to the school that charges the lowest tuition. Of course the location and cost of the training are critical considerations when evaluating trade school options, but they should not be the sole ones. Additional factors such as accreditation and the reputation of the schools are important as well. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions you should be asking so you can get the information to make a final selection. We will review some of those questions later in this article. But first, let’s look at some of the vocation options that are available as well as the availability of online schools.

Trade Schools Online

Lewis KS student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become more attractive with Lewis KS students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. Even though learning online is a readily available and practical way to earn a certificate or degree, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For instance, learning to operate a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training can be appropriate for online learning, for example learning safety and driving guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Many programs will combine online education with on-campus lab work, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is crucial to determine before choosing an online program for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training devoted to the course of study. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both suitable for online learning and delivers in-depth hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for online training, it can be a practical way for individuals with time constraints to acquire a new profession.

Points to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Lewis KS trade schoolsWhen you have decided on the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you want to attain, either on campus or online, you can start to decrease your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are numerous technical schools in the  Lewis KS area and all over the United States to choose from. That’s why it is essential to have a list of key qualifiers when making school evaluations. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the first two aspects you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you will want to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Lewis KS area vocational schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Make sure that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you obtain a quality education, it may help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Also, some states mandate that the  training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help measure the quality of a trade school near Lewis KS is how long it has been in operation. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to begin from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate might signify that students were dissatisfied with the course and quit. It may also suggest that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist grads obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Lewis KS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of technical programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or labor unions. Check if the schools you are considering have working partnerships with Lewis KS area companies in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by furnishing practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the tech you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Lewis KS contracting company if they can provide some suggestions. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Speak to a few of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Kansas and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Lewis KS, check that the schools you are comparing offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family issues.
