However with numerous vocational schools to select from, just how do you approach finding the right one? Not only do you have to make certain that you will get the comprehensive training necessary to succeed in your new occupation, but also that the school is reputable and well regarded. Many students make the mistake of choosing a trade school simply because the campus is nearest to their residence or place of employment. Others may gravitate to the one that charges the most affordable tuition. Naturally the location and cost of the training are critical factors when assessing vocational school options, but they can not be the only ones. Additional variables such as reputation and accreditation of the schools are critical also. So before you begin evaluating and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions you should be asking in order to get the information to make a final choice. We will address some of those questions later in this article. But to start with, let’s look at a few of the trade options that are available including the availability of online programs.

Trade Schools Online

Howard KS student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Howard KS students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. Even though learning online is a readily available and practical way to obtain a certificate or degree, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, learning to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be suitable for online training, such as studying driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will combine online instruction with on campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to ask before choosing an online program for any trade if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training allocated to the course of study. One means to help establish est that a trade school program is both appropriate for online learning and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for students with time constraints to learn a new profession.

Questions to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Howard KS trade schoolsAs soon as you have chosen the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, either online or on campus, you can begin to limit your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are many trade schools in the  Howard KS area and all over the United States to choose from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a list of relevant qualifications when making school assessments. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the initial 2 factors you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you will want to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Howard KS area trade schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Confirm that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you receive a superior education, it may help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, many states require that the  training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help evaluate the quality of a trade school near Howard KS is how long it has been in business. A negatively rated or a fly by night school normally will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to start from their first day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate may suggest that students were unhappy with the course and quit. It could also indicate that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s also essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help students secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Howard KS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most trade programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with Howard KS area specialists in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the specialist you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Howard KS company if they can provide some pointers. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Speak to some of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Kansas and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Howard KS, verify that the programs you are considering provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.
