new skills training sign Haviland KSChoosing to enter into a new profession and enroll in a trade school near Haviland KS are serious decisions that will profoundly affect your long term career. However with numerous trade schools to pick from, just how do you approach finding the right one? Not only do you have to make certain that you will receive the comprehensive training necessary to be successful in your new profession, but also that the school is reputable and well regarded. A number of prospective students make the error of selecting a trade school just because the campus is nearest to their residence or place of employment. Others may be attracted to the one that has the most affordable tuition. Naturally the cost and location of the programs are important considerations when evaluating vocational school options, but they must not be the only ones. Added factors such as accreditation and the reputation of the schools are critical as well. So before you begin evaluating and comparing trade schools, you must know what questions you should be asking in order to get the information to make a final choice. We will cover a few of those questions later in this article. But first, let’s talk about a few of the vocation options that are available as well as the availability of online schools.

Online Trade Schools

Haviland KS student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become more attractive with Haviland KS students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. Even though learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, learning to operate a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be appropriate for online learning, for example studying driving and safety guidelines for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will blend online education with on-campus lab work, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to determine before enrolling in an online program for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of practical training devoted to the syllabus. One means to help ensure that a trade school program is both suitable for online learning and delivers in-depth practical training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for training online, it can be a practical way for students with limited time to learn a new vocation.

Concerns to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Haviland KS trade schoolsOnce you have picked the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, either online or on campus, you can start to decrease your selection of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are many vocational schools in the  Haviland KS area and across the Country to pick from. That’s why it is essential to have a checklist of important qualifications when making school evaluations. As earlier stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will undoubtedly be the first 2 factors you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you need to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Numerous Haviland KS area technical programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Make sure that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you obtain an excellent education, it can help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, many states require that the  training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help determine the quality of a trade school near Haviland KS is how long it has been in operation. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school normally will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to start from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate may signify that students were disappointed with the program and quit. It might also indicate that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help graduates secure apprenticeships or employment in the Haviland KS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of technical programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or trade unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with Haviland KS area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the technician you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Haviland KS company if they can give you some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there can be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Talk with a few of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Kansas and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Haviland KS, verify that the schools you are considering provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.
