new skills training sign Glade KSChoosing to enter into a new profession and enroll in a vocational school near Glade KS are important decisions that will profoundly impact your future career. However with so many trade schools to pick from, just how do you go about locating the ideal one? Not only do you have to confirm that you will get the comprehensive training needed to be successful in your new profession, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. Some students make the mistake of enrolling in a trade school just because the campus is closest to their home or where the work. Or they might be attracted to the one that has the lowest tuition. Naturally the location and cost of the programs are significant factors when analyzing vocational school options, but they should not be the only ones. Added considerations including accreditation and the reputation of the schools are critical also. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions to ask so you can get the information to make a final choice. We will cover some of those questions later in this article. But to start with, let’s look at a few of the trade options that are available including the availability of online schools.

Online Vocational Schools

Glade KS student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become more attractive with Glade KS students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. Even though learning online is a readily available and practical way to earn a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For instance, learning to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be appropriate for online education, such as studying driving and safety regulations for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will incorporate online education with on campus practical training, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to ask before choosing an online program for any trade if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training devoted to the course of study. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online learning and delivers comprehensive practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for training online, it can be a practical way for individuals with limited time to acquire a new trade.

What to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Glade KS trade schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you desire to obtain, either online or on campus, you can begin to decrease your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are a large number of trade schools in the  Glade KS area and all over the United States to select from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a checklist of relevant qualifications when making school assessments. As earlier stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will probably be the first two variables you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you should research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Glade KS area technical schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Make sure that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you receive an excellent education, it may help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, many states mandate that the  training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help assess the quality of a trade school near Glade KS is how long it has been in business. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school usually will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate may indicate that students were disappointed with the course and dropped out. It could also signify that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which can produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help graduates secure apprenticeships or employment in the Glade KS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many trade programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of businesses or trade unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have referring partnerships with Glade KS area specialists in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by providing hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the technician you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Glade KS contracting company if they can give you some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Talk to some of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Kansas and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Glade KS, verify that the schools you are comparing provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.
