Learning a Trade Online

Wellsburg IA student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Wellsburg IA students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. Although online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a degree or certificate, it may not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For example, training to operate a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that have to be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be suitable for online training, such as learning driving and safety regulations for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will incorporate online instruction with on-campus lab work, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to determine before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is a suitable amount of practical training devoted to the syllabus. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online learning and delivers comprehensive practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for students with time constraints to learn a new profession.

What to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Wellsburg IA trade schoolsAfter you have selected the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you wish to obtain, either on campus or online, you can begin to decrease your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are many vocational schools in the  Wellsburg IA area and throughout the United States to choose from. That’s why it is essential to have a list of important qualifiers when making school comparisons. As formerly mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will probably be the first two factors you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you need to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Wellsburg IA area trade programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for instance HVAC technology. Confirm that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you acquire a superior education, it may help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited programs. Also, many states require that the  training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help assess the quality of a trade school near Wellsburg IA is how long it has been in business. A negatively ranked or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to start from their opening day of training, so use it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate may signify that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It may also indicate that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help grads secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Wellsburg IA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many trade programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of businesses or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have referring partnerships with Wellsburg IA area professionals in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the technician you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Wellsburg IA contracting company if they can give you some tips. Also keep in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Speak with some of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Iowa and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Wellsburg IA, check that the schools you are comparing provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family emergencies.
