new skills training sign Curlew IAChoosing to work in a new occupation and enroll in a vocational school near Curlew IA are serious decisions that will profoundly affect your future career. However with numerous trade schools to pick from, exactly how do you approach finding the best one? Not only do you have to confirm that you will receive the complete training required to succeed in your new profession, but also that the school is reputable and well regarded. Many potential students make the error of selecting a trade school just because the campus is closest to their home or place of employment. Others may gravitate to the school that charges the lowest tuition. Naturally the cost and location of the programs are critical factors when analyzing trade school options, but they should not be the sole ones. Added variables such as accreditation and the reputation of the schools are critical also. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions to ask in order to get the information to make a final selection. We will cover several of those questions shortly in this article. But to start with, let’s talk about some of the vocation options that are offered as well as the accessibility of online schools.

Learning a Trade Online

Curlew IA student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become more attractive with Curlew IA students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. Although online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be suitable for online training, for example learning safety and driving guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will combine online instruction with on-campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to ask before choosing an online school for any trade if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training devoted to the syllabus. One means to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online education and provides in-depth hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for online training, it can be a practical way for those with limited time to learn a new profession.

Points to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Curlew IA trade schoolsWhen you have picked the trade and type of certificate or degree that you want to acquire, either on campus or online, you can start to limit your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are a large number of vocational schools in the  Curlew IA area and throughout the USA to select from. That’s why it is very important to have a list of relevant qualifications when making school evaluations. As previously stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the initial 2 variables you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you should explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Curlew IA area technical programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for instance HVAC technology. Confirm that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you receive a quality education, it can help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, some states require that the  training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help determine the quality of a trade school near Curlew IA is how long it has been in operation. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school usually will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to start from their first day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate may suggest that students were dissatisfied with the course and quit. It could also mean that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help graduates acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Curlew IA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many vocational programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have working relationships with Curlew IA area specialists in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the technician you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Curlew IA contractor if they can give you some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Talk with some of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Iowa and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Curlew IA, check that the programs you are considering offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family issues.
