Learning a Vocation Online

Sellersburg IN student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Sellersburg IN students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. While learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a degree or certificate, it may not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For instance, training to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be appropriate for online learning, for example learning driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will blend online education with on-campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to ask before choosing an online school for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training devoted to the course of study. One means to help ensure that a trade school program is both suitable for online learning and provides comprehensive practical training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for individuals with limited time to acquire a new profession.

What to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Sellersburg IN trade schoolsAfter you have picked the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you desire to earn, either online or on campus, you can begin to narrow down your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are a large number of technical schools in the  Sellersburg IN area and all over the Country to pick from. That’s why it is essential to have a list of relevant qualifications when making school assessments. As formerly mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the initial 2 aspects you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you need to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Numerous Sellersburg IN area vocational schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Make certain that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you acquire a quality education, it may assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, a number of states mandate that the  training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help measure the quality of a trade school near Sellersburg IN is how long it has been in business. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to begin from their first day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate could indicate that students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. It could also suggest that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which can mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist students obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Sellersburg IN area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many trade programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have referring partnerships with Sellersburg IN area companies in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the specialist you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Sellersburg IN company if they can give you some tips. Also keep in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk to some of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Indiana and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Sellersburg IN, check that the schools you are considering provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.
