Online Trade Schools

Niantic IL student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Niantic IL students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. Although online learning is a readily available and practical way to earn a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For instance, training to operate a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training can be suitable for online classes, such as learning driving and safety regulations for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will incorporate online education with on-campus lab work, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to determine before choosing an online school for any trade if there is a suitable amount of practical training devoted to the curriculum. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both suitable for online studying and provides comprehensive practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for those with limited time to learn a new profession.

Things to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Niantic IL trade schoolsAfter you have selected the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, either on campus or online, you can start to limit your selection of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are many trade schools in the  Niantic IL area and throughout the United States to choose from. That’s why it is essential to have a list of important qualifiers when making school evaluations. As formerly stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the initial two aspects you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you will want to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Numerous Niantic IL area vocational programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Verify that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you get an excellent education, it may assist in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, many states mandate that the  training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help measure the quality of a trade school near Niantic IL is how long it has been in business. A poorly rated or a fly by night school normally will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate could signify that students were unhappy with the program and quit. It might also indicate that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which can mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help students secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Niantic IL area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of trade programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of businesses or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have referring partnerships with Niantic IL area companies in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Niantic IL contracting company if they can give you some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Talk with some of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Illinois and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Niantic IL, verify that the programs you are comparing provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.
