Learning a Trade Online

Hoffman Estates IL student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become more attractive with Hoffman Estates IL students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. Although online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a certificate or degree, it may not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training can be appropriate for online classes, such as studying driving and safety guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will blend online education with on campus lab work, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to find out before enrolling in an online program for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training devoted to the course of study. One way to help establish est that a trade school program is both appropriate for online learning and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for online training, it can be a practical way for students with time constraints to learn a new vocation.

Things to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Hoffman Estates IL trade schoolsAfter you have picked the trade and type of degree or certificate that you desire to acquire, either online or on campus, you can begin to limit your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are numerous technical schools in the  Hoffman Estates IL area and throughout the USA to choose from. That’s why it is very important to have a checklist of important qualifiers when making school evaluations. As formerly mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the first 2 factors you will consider. Following are some additional ones that you should investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Hoffman Estates IL area trade schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Verify that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you get an excellent education, it can assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited schools. Additionally, many states require that the  training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help evaluate the quality of a vocational school near Hoffman Estates IL is how long it has been in business. A negatively rated or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate could suggest that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It could also mean that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist students acquire apprenticeships or employment in the Hoffman Estates IL area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many vocational programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Hoffman Estates IL area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the tech you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Hoffman Estates IL company if they can provide some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Speak with several of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Illinois and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Hoffman Estates IL, verify that the schools you are comparing provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.
