Learning a Trade Online

Rexburg ID student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become more attractive with Rexburg ID students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. While learning online is a readily available and practical way to earn a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For instance, learning to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training can be suitable for online learning, for example learning driving and safety regulations for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Some programs will combine online education with on-campus practical training, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is essential to determine before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is an adequate amount of practical training devoted to the course of study. One way to help establish est that a trade school program is both appropriate for online learning and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a convenient way for students with limited time to learn a new trade.

Questions to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Rexburg ID trade schoolsOnce you have selected the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you desire to obtain, either on campus or online, you can start to decrease your selection of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are a large number of technical schools in the  Rexburg ID area and throughout the United States to pick from. That’s why it is imperative to have a checklist of key qualifiers when making school assessments. As previously stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the first two variables you will consider. Following are several additional ones that you should research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Rexburg ID area trade programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Confirm that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you obtain a quality education, it can assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Also, many states require that the  training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help determine the quality of a trade school near Rexburg ID is how long it has been in operation. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so use it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate might signify that students were dissatisfied with the course and dropped out. It might also signify that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which can mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates secure apprenticeships or employment in the Rexburg ID area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many technical programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Rexburg ID area companies in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by supplying practical training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the specialist you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Rexburg ID contracting company if they can give you some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Speak to several of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Idaho and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Rexburg ID, check that the programs you are comparing offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.
