Learning a Vocation Online

Elk River ID student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become more attractive with Elk River ID students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. While online learning is a readily available and practical way to obtain a degree or certificate, it may not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For instance, training to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be suitable for online learning, such as studying safety and driving guidelines for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will combine online education with on campus practical training, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is crucial to ask before choosing an online program for any trade if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training devoted to the course of study. One means to help establish est that a trade school program is both suitable for online learning and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for online training, it can be a convenient way for individuals with time constraints to learn a new trade.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate could indicate that students were dissatisfied with the course and dropped out. It could also mean that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s also essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist students acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Elk River ID area.

An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by supplying practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the tech you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Elk River ID contractor if they can give you some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there may be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Talk to several of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Idaho and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Elk River ID, verify that the programs you are comparing offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment.
