Online Vocational Schools

Nederland CO student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Nederland CO students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. Even though online learning is a readily available and practical way to obtain a degree or certificate, it may not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For instance, training to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be suitable for online training, such as studying safety and driving guidelines for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Many programs will incorporate online instruction with on-campus lab work, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to determine before enrolling in an online program for any trade if there is an adequate amount of practical training devoted to the course of study. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online studying and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for individuals with limited time to learn a new vocation.

Things to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Nederland CO trade schoolsAs soon as you have picked the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you desire to attain, either on campus or online, you can start to limit your selection of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are a large number of technical schools in the  Nederland CO area and all over the Country to select from. That’s why it is imperative to have a list of important qualifications when making school comparisons. As formerly mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will undoubtedly be the first two aspects you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you should research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Nederland CO area vocational schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Verify that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you obtain a superior education, it can help in securing financial aid or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited schools. Additionally, many states require that the  training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help assess the quality of a trade school near Nederland CO is how long it has been in operation. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school normally will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate might suggest that students were disappointed with the program and quit. It could also indicate that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which may result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Nederland CO area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most trade programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or labor unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have referring partnerships with Nederland CO area companies in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the tech you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Nederland CO company if they can give you some suggestions. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Speak to some of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Colorado and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Nederland CO, verify that the schools you are considering provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family responsibilities.
