However with numerous trade schools to choose from, just how do you go about finding the right one? Not only do you have to confirm that you will obtain the complete training necessary to succeed in your new profession, but also that the school is reputable and well regarded. Some prospective students make the error of choosing a vocational school simply because the campus is closest to their residence or where the work. Or they might gravitate to the school that has the most affordable tuition. Naturally the location and cost of the training are significant considerations when assessing trade school options, but they should not be the sole ones. Other factors such as reputation and accreditation of the schools are important as well. So before you begin evaluating and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions to ask so you can get the information to make a final choice. We will address several of those questions shortly in this article. But to start with, let’s talk about a few of the trade options that are available as well as the availability of online schools.

Learning a Vocation Online

Vacaville CA student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become more attractive with Vacaville CA students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. Even though online learning is a readily available and practical way to earn a certificate or degree, it might not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training can be suitable for online training, for example studying safety and driving regulations for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will blend online education with on campus lab work, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is essential to determine before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training devoted to the course of study. One way to help establish est that a vocational school program is both suitable for online studying and delivers comprehensive hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for online training, it can be a practical way for those with limited time to learn a new profession.

Questions to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Vacaville CA trade schoolsOnce you have picked the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, either on campus or online, you can begin to limit your selection of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are a large number of trade schools in the  Vacaville CA area and throughout the United States to choose from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a list of key qualifiers when making school assessments. As earlier stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will undoubtedly be the first two aspects you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you need to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Vacaville CA area trade programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Make sure that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you obtain an excellent education, it may help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, some states mandate that the  training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help assess the quality of a trade school near Vacaville CA is how long it has been in business. A negatively ranked or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate could signify that students were dissatisfied with the course and quit. It could also indicate that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help graduates secure apprenticeships or employment in the Vacaville CA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of trade programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with Vacaville CA area companies in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Vacaville CA company if they can give you some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Speak with some of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in California and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Vacaville CA, confirm that the schools you are reviewing offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family issues.
