Learning a Trade Online

Upper Lake CA student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Upper Lake CA students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. Although learning online is a readily available and practical way to obtain a degree or certificate, it may not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For instance, training to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be appropriate for online training, such as learning safety and driving guidelines for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will incorporate online education with on campus practical training, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to ask before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training allocated to the syllabus. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online learning and delivers comprehensive practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for students with limited time to acquire a new vocation.

Concerns to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Upper Lake CA trade schoolsWhen you have chosen the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you would like to attain, either on campus or online, you can start to limit your selection of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are a large number of vocational schools in the  Upper Lake CA area and across the USA to select from. That’s why it is very important to have a checklist of important qualifiers when making school evaluations. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the first 2 factors you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you should investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Numerous Upper Lake CA area trade schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Make sure that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you receive a superior education, it can assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Also, a number of states mandate that the  training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help determine the quality of a trade school near Upper Lake CA is how long it has been in business. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school normally will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate might suggest that students were unhappy with the program and quit. It could also signify that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help students obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Upper Lake CA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most trade programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Upper Lake CA area companies in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the specialist you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Upper Lake CA contractor if they can provide some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Speak with a few of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in California and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Upper Lake CA, confirm that the programs you are reviewing provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family issues.

    Upper Lake, California

Upper Lake is a census-designated place (CDP) in Lake County, California, United States.[2] Upper Lake is located 8 miles (13 km) north of Lakeport,[4] at an elevation of 1345 feet (410 m).[2] The population was 1,052 at the 2010 census, up from 989 at the 2000 census. The Habematolel Pomo of Upper Lake are headquartered here.[3]

This community was formerly named Upper Clear Lake and Upperlake. The Upper Clear Lake post office opened in 1871, changed its name to Upper Lake in 1875, to Upperlake in 1905, and then back to Upper Lake in 1906.[4]

The settlement began in 1854 or 1856, when William B. Elliott opened a blacksmith's shop.[4][5] About ten years later, in 1866, a man named Bukofsky built a store, followed by another blacksmith shop built by Caspar Sweikert. A hotel was started by Henry Taylor. A grist mill was built in 1858 until it closed in 1867. A second grist mill was built in 1875. The community grew as cattle stock, alfalfa and bean canneries became the main economic draws.[5]
