Not only do you have to make sure that you will receive the extensive training required to succeed in your new profession, but also that the school is reputable and well regarded. Others might be attracted to the school that has the lowest tuition. Of course the cost and location of the programs are important considerations when evaluating vocational school options, but they must not be the only ones. Other variables including accreditation and the reputation of the schools are important also. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you must know what questions to ask in order to get the information to make a final choice. We will review several of those questions later in this post. But to start with, let’s look at some of the vocation options that are available including the availability of online programs.

Trade Schools Online

Clovis NM student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become more attractive with Clovis NM students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. While learning online is a readily available and practical way to acquire a certificate or degree, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, learning to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be appropriate for online classes, for instance learning driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will incorporate online instruction with on-campus practical training, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is crucial to determine before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of practical training devoted to the course of study. One means to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online studying and delivers comprehensive practical training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for online training, it can be a convenient way for students with limited time to learn a new profession.

Things to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Clovis NM trade schoolsWhen you have selected the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you wish to acquire, either online or on campus, you can start to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are a large number of technical schools in the  Clovis NM area and all over the United States to select from. That’s why it is imperative to have a list of relevant qualifications when making school evaluations. As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will probably be the first two aspects you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you need to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Clovis NM area trade schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Verify that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you acquire a superior education, it can assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Also, many states mandate that the  training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help determine the quality of a trade school near Clovis NM is how long it has been in operation. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school normally will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to start from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate could signify that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It may also mean that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist students secure apprenticeships or employment in the Clovis NM area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of technical programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have referring relationships with Clovis NM area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by furnishing practical training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the tech you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Clovis NM contracting company if they can give you some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within driving distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Speak to a few of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in New Mexico and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Clovis NM, check that the programs you are considering provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.

    Clovis, New Mexico

Clovis is the county seat of Curry County, New Mexico, United States,[3] with a population of 37,775 as of the 2010 census, and a 2014 estimated population of 39,860.[4] Clovis is located in the New Mexico portion of the Llano Estacado, in the eastern part of the state.

A largely agricultural community, closely bordering Texas, it is noted for its role in early rock music history and for nearby Cannon Air Force Base. After the discovery of several "Clovis culture" sites in eastern North America in the 1930s, the Clovis people came to be regarded as the first human inhabitants who created a widespread culture in the New World. Clovis people are considered to be the ancestors of most of the indigenous cultures of the Americas. The Atchison, Topeka, & Santa Fe Railway system helped to establish Clovis over a hundred years ago, and for that railroad and its successor BNSF Railway continues to be a major hub of operations. Also notable is the Southwest Cheese Company, the largest cheddar cheese producer in North America.

The eastern New Mexico region was home to the prehistoric Clovis culture, an anthropologically significant group of early Native Americans. Several remains have been found at the Blackwater Draw site (south of Clovis, near Portales), which remains a historical and tourist site.
