Learning a Trade Online

Sundance WY student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become more attractive with Sundance WY students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. While learning online is a readily available and practical way to earn a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, learning to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training can be appropriate for online training, for instance studying driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Many programs will incorporate online education with on-campus lab work, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to determine before enrolling in an online program for any vocation if there is a suitable amount of practical training allocated to the course of study. One means to help ensure that a trade school program is both suitable for online studying and provides in-depth practical training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for online training, it can be a practical way for students with limited time to acquire a new trade.

Things to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Sundance WY trade schoolsAfter you have chosen the trade and type of certificate or degree that you want to acquire, either on campus or online, you can start to decrease your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are a large number of vocational schools in the  Sundance WY area and throughout the United States to pick from. That’s why it is essential to have a list of relevant qualifications when making school evaluations. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the first 2 aspects you will consider. Following are several additional ones that you should research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Numerous Sundance WY area vocational programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for instance HVAC technology. Make sure that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you obtain a quality education, it may assist in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, some states mandate that the  training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help measure the quality of a trade school near Sundance WY is how long it has been in operation. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school usually will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate might suggest that students were dissatisfied with the course and dropped out. It might also suggest that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which can mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist grads secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Sundance WY area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous technical programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Sundance WY area companies in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the specialist you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Sundance WY contracting company if they can provide some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Speak to some of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Wyoming and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Sundance WY, check that the schools you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.
