Online Vocational Schools

Troy TN student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Troy TN students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. While online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a degree or certificate, it may not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For instance, training to drive a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be suitable for online classes, for example learning driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Many programs will blend online education with on campus practical training, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to determine before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is a suitable amount of practical training allocated to the curriculum. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online education and provides in-depth hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for students with limited time to learn a new profession.

Things to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Troy TN trade schoolsAs soon as you have chosen the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you would like to attain, either online or on campus, you can begin to limit your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are many vocational schools in the  Troy TN area and all over the Country to choose from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a list of important qualifiers when making school evaluations. As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the first two aspects you will consider. Following are some additional ones that you need to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Troy TN area technical programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Make certain that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you acquire a superior education, it may assist in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, many states require that the  training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help assess the quality of a vocational school near Troy TN is how long it has been in operation. A negatively rated or a fly by night school usually will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate could suggest that students were unhappy with the program and quit. It may also signify that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help graduates acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Troy TN area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most training programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating technical and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have referring partnerships with Troy TN area contractors in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Troy TN contracting company if they can provide some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Speak with a few of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Tennessee and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Troy TN, check that the programs you are comparing offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.
