Online Vocational Schools

Willow Lake SD student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Willow Lake SD students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. Even though learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a degree or certificate, it may not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For example, learning to operate a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be appropriate for online education, for instance studying safety and driving guidelines for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will incorporate online instruction with on-campus practical training, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to find out before choosing an online program for any trade if there is a suitable amount of practical training allocated to the curriculum. One means to help establish est that a vocational school program is both suitable for online studying and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for students with time constraints to acquire a new trade.

What to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Willow Lake SD trade schoolsOnce you have picked the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you wish to attain, either on campus or online, you can start to limit your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are a large number of trade schools in the  Willow Lake SD area and throughout the Country to select from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a checklist of relevant qualifiers when making school comparisons. As formerly mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will undoubtedly be the initial 2 factors you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you should explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Willow Lake SD area technical programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Confirm that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you obtain a quality education, it can assist in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Also, some states require that the  training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help assess the quality of a trade school near Willow Lake SD is how long it has been in business. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate might indicate that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It could also mean that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help graduates acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Willow Lake SD area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of trade programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with Willow Lake SD area specialists in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the tech you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Willow Lake SD contractor if they can provide some suggestions. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Speak with some of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in South Dakota and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Willow Lake SD, confirm that the schools you are considering provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.
