new skills training sign Westport SDChoosing to work in a new profession and enroll in a vocational school near Westport SD are serious decisions that will greatly affect your future career. However with so many vocational schools to choose from, exactly how do you go about finding the ideal one? Not only do you need to make certain that you will get the extensive training needed to succeed in your new profession, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. A number of potential students make the mistake of enrolling in a vocational school just because the campus is nearest to their home or place of employment. Or they may gravitate to the school that charges the lowest tuition. Of course the cost and location of the training are critical considerations when evaluating vocational school options, but they should not be the sole ones. Other factors such as accreditation and the reputation of the schools are critical also. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions to ask so you can get the information to make a final selection. We will cover some of those questions shortly in this post. But first, let’s talk about a few of the vocation options that are offered including the availability of online schools.

Online Vocational Schools

Westport SD student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become more attractive with Westport SD students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. Although learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a degree or certificate, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For instance, learning to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training can be suitable for online training, for instance learning safety and driving guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will blend online instruction with on campus lab work, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to find out before choosing an online school for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training allocated to the course of study. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online education and delivers in-depth hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for those with time constraints to learn a new profession.

Questions to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Westport SD trade schoolsAfter you have decided on the trade and type of certificate or degree that you wish to obtain, either online or on campus, you can begin to limit your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are a large number of technical schools in the  Westport SD area and throughout the USA to choose from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a list of key qualifiers when making school evaluations. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will undoubtedly be the initial two variables you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you need to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Westport SD area trade programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for instance HVAC technology. Verify that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you receive a superior education, it may assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited programs. Also, a number of states mandate that the  training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help evaluate the quality of a trade school near Westport SD is how long it has been in operation. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school usually will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to begin from their first day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate could signify that students were unhappy with the course and quit. It could also indicate that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help grads secure apprenticeships or employment in the Westport SD area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most vocational programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or labor unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Westport SD area professionals in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by providing hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the tech you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Westport SD contracting company if they can provide some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Speak to a few of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in South Dakota and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Westport SD, verify that the programs you are considering offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.

You need to check out each of the schools in person that you are most interested in to explore the campus and talk with both the faculty and current students.
