Vocational Schools Online

Slocum RI student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Slocum RI students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. Even though learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, learning to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be appropriate for online classes, such as learning safety and driving regulations for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will blend online instruction with on campus practical training, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is essential to determine before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training devoted to the course of study. One way to help establish est that a trade school program is both suitable for online studying and delivers in-depth hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for online training, it can be a practical way for those with limited time to learn a new profession.

What to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Slocum RI trade schoolsAfter you have chosen the trade and type of degree or certificate that you desire to attain, either online or on campus, you can begin to limit your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are many trade schools in the  Slocum RI area and all over the United States to choose from. That’s why it is very important to have a checklist of relevant qualifiers when making school assessments. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will undoubtedly be the initial two aspects you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you should investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Numerous Slocum RI area technical schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for instance HVAC technology. Make sure that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you acquire an excellent education, it can assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, a number of states require that the  training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help measure the quality of a vocational school near Slocum RI is how long it has been in business. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school normally will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate may signify that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It might also suggest that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Slocum RI area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most technical programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of businesses or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have referring partnerships with Slocum RI area professionals in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by furnishing practical training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the tech you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Slocum RI company if they can give you some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Speak to a few of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Rhode Island and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Slocum RI, check that the schools you are comparing offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.
