Trade Schools Online

York Haven PA student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with York Haven PA students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. Although learning online is a readily available and practical way to acquire a degree or certificate, it may not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, learning to drive a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be appropriate for online training, such as studying safety and driving regulations for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will blend online education with on-campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to ask before enrolling in an online program for any vocation if there is a suitable amount of practical training devoted to the curriculum. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online education and provides in-depth hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for online training, it can be a convenient way for individuals with limited time to learn a new profession.

Questions to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask York Haven PA trade schoolsAfter you have decided on the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you wish to earn, either on campus or online, you can begin to limit your selection of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are numerous trade schools in the  York Haven PA area and all over the United States to select from. That’s why it is essential to have a list of important qualifications when making school assessments. As previously stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the first 2 variables you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you will want to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of York Haven PA area trade programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Make sure that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you get an excellent education, it may help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited programs. Also, a number of states require that the  training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help measure the quality of a vocational school near York Haven PA is how long it has been in business. A poorly rated or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the top schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate might suggest that students were unhappy with the program and quit. It could also mean that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help grads secure apprenticeships or employment in the York Haven PA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many vocational programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of businesses or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with York Haven PA area contractors in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the specialist you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local York Haven PA contractor if they can give you some tips. Also keep in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk to a few of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Pennsylvania and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near York Haven PA, check that the schools you are looking at offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.
