Online Vocational Schools

Timberlake NC student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become more attractive with Timberlake NC students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. Even though online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a degree or certificate, it may not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For instance, training to operate a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be appropriate for online learning, such as learning safety and driving regulations for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Many programs will combine online instruction with on campus lab work, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to determine before choosing an online program for any trade if there is an adequate amount of practical training devoted to the syllabus. One way to help establish est that a trade school program is both suitable for online studying and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for online training, it can be a convenient way for individuals with limited time to learn a new profession.

Questions to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Timberlake NC trade schoolsAfter you have decided on the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, either online or on campus, you can start to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are a large number of vocational schools in the  Timberlake NC area and across the Country to select from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a checklist of important qualifications when making school assessments. As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the first 2 aspects you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you will want to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Numerous Timberlake NC area vocational programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for instance HVAC technology. Make certain that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you get a quality education, it can assist in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, a number of states mandate that the  training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help determine the quality of a vocational school near Timberlake NC is how long it has been in business. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school usually will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate could indicate that students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. It might also indicate that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which can mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help students secure apprenticeships or employment in the Timberlake NC area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most technical programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have referring partnerships with Timberlake NC area specialists in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the technician you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Timberlake NC contractor if they can give you some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much personalized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Speak with several of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in North Carolina and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Timberlake NC, verify that the schools you are comparing provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family issues.
