Learning a Trade Online

Colstrip MT student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Colstrip MT students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. Although learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a degree or certificate, it may not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, training to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that have to be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training can be suitable for online training, such as learning driving and safety regulations for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Some programs will incorporate online instruction with on-campus practical training, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to determine before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training allocated to the course of study. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online education and provides comprehensive practical training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a convenient way for those with limited time to acquire a new vocation.

A lower completion rate may signify that students were unhappy with the course and quit. It may also indicate that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Colstrip MT area.

Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or trade unions. Check if the schools you are considering have working relationships with Colstrip MT area companies in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the specialist you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Colstrip MT company if they can give you some tips. Also keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Talk to a few of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Montana and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Colstrip MT, verify that the programs you are comparing offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment.
