However with numerous trade schools to select from, just how do you approach locating the best one? Not only do you need to ascertain that you will get the extensive training necessary to succeed in your new occupation, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. A number of potential students make the error of enrolling in a vocational school just because the campus is closest to their residence or place of employment. Or they may gravitate to the school that has the lowest tuition. Of course the cost and location of the training are important factors when evaluating trade school options, but they should not be the sole ones. Added considerations such as accreditation and the reputation of the schools are critical also. So before you begin evaluating and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions you should be asking so you can get the information to make a final choice. We will cover some of those questions shortly in this post. But to start with, let’s talk about some of the vocation options that are available including the availability of online schools.

Trade Schools Online

Granger MO student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Granger MO students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. Even though online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a certificate or degree, it may not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For instance, learning to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be appropriate for online learning, for instance studying driving and safety guidelines for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Some programs will combine online instruction with on-campus lab work, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is essential to find out before choosing an online program for any trade if there is a suitable amount of practical training allocated to the syllabus. One means to help ensure that a trade school program is both suitable for online studying and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for online training, it can be a convenient way for students with time constraints to learn a new profession.

Things to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Granger MO trade schoolsAfter you have picked the trade and type of degree or certificate that you want to attain, either on campus or online, you can start to narrow down your list of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are many vocational schools in the  Granger MO area and throughout the Country to select from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a checklist of key qualifications when making school evaluations. As formerly mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will undoubtedly be the first 2 aspects you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you will want to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Granger MO area technical schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Make certain that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you get an excellent education, it may help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, a number of states require that the  training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help measure the quality of a vocational school near Granger MO is how long it has been in operation. A poorly rated or a fly by night school usually will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate may indicate that students were disappointed with the course and dropped out. It could also indicate that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which may produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help graduates obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Granger MO area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most trade programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or labor unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with Granger MO area specialists in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the specialist you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Granger MO contractor if they can give you some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk with a few of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Missouri and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Granger MO, confirm that the programs you are reviewing offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family issues.
