Online Vocational Schools

Nettleton MS student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Nettleton MS students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. While learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a certificate or degree, it may not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For instance, training to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be appropriate for online training, such as studying safety and driving guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will incorporate online instruction with on campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to find out before choosing an online school for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training devoted to the curriculum. One way to help establish est that a trade school program is both appropriate for online education and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a convenient way for individuals with time constraints to acquire a new vocation.

Things to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Nettleton MS trade schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the trade and type of degree or certificate that you want to obtain, either on campus or online, you can start to narrow down your list of schools. Following are several additional ones that you need to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Numerous Nettleton MS area trade schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Make sure that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you obtain an excellent education, it can help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, a number of states require that the  training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help evaluate the quality of a vocational school near Nettleton MS is how long it has been in operation. However, even the top schools had to start from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate may suggest that students were disappointed with the program and quit. It might also suggest that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist students acquire apprenticeships or employment in the Nettleton MS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of technical programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or labor unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have referring partnerships with Nettleton MS area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by supplying practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the tech you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Nettleton MS contractor if they can provide some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Speak with a few of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Mississippi and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Nettleton MS, confirm that the programs you are comparing offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.
