Wyaconda, Missouri

Wyaconda is a city in Clark County, Missouri, United States. The population was 227 at the 2010 census. The city was organized in 1888 and is named after a Siouan name for God or the Great Spirit.[6] The first land purchased from the Santa Fe and Land Co. was in 1888.

At the 2010 census,[2] there were 227 people, 108 households and 63 families in the city. The population density was 354.7 inhabitants per square mile (137.0/km2). There were 140 housing units at an average density of 218.8 per square mile (84.5/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 98.2% White and 1.8% from two or more races.

There were 108 households of which 27.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.5% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, 5.6% had a male householder with no wife present, and 41.7% were non-families. 38.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.10 and the average family size was 2.76.

Wyatt, Missouri

Wyatt was originally called Pevey Switch, and under the latter name had its start in 1881 when the railroad was extended to that point.[6] A post office called Wyatt has been in operation since 1895.[7] The present name is after William Wyatt, an early settler.[6]

The Cotton Belt 5.3-mile rail line, between Birds Point and Wyatt, Missouri, was abandoned by Interstate Commerce Commission order on October 9, 1938. In late 1941, an oil pipeline was laid on the old Cotton Belt right-of-way, between Wyatt and Birds Point, to facilitate the transportation of crude oil by barge. Cotton Belt handled railroad tank cars from Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas to Wyatt for shipment by pipeline of the oil to Birds Point and trans loading onto barges. The 8.7-mile railroad line, between Wyatt and East Prairie, Missouri, was abandoned by Interstate Commerce Commission order on April 25, 1980.[8][9]

Wyatt is located at 36°55′9″N 89°12′36″W / 36.91917°N 89.21000°W / 36.91917; -89.21000 (36.919150, -89.209960).[10] The city is concentrated along Missouri Route 77 in eastern Mississippi County, just west of the Mississippi River. The village of Wilson City lies opposite U.S. Route 62 to the north. Wyatt straddles the western edge of the Birds Point-New Madrid Floodway.

Willow Springs, Missouri

Willow Springs was so named from its position at the site of a spring, surrounded by willows. The spring is located near the junction of state route RA and highway 60. The town was moved to it's current location (approximately 10 miles to the west) to be near the Frisco railroad. [6]

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 2,184 people, 925 households, and 564 families residing in the city. The population density was 618.7 inhabitants per square mile (238.9/km2). There were 1,082 housing units at an average density of 306.5 per square mile (118.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 96.11% White, 0.14% Black or African American, 0.41% Native American, 0.73% Asian, 0.46% from other races, and 2.15% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.06% of the population.

There were 925 households of which 31.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.3% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, 5.0% had a male householder with no wife present, and 39.0% were non-families. 35.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 2.94.

Zalma, Missouri

Zalma, once known as Bollinger's Mill, is a town on the banks of the winding Castor River at a point where the river makes a horseshoe bend in southern Bollinger County in southeast Missouri. When the railroad moved to town, the name Bollinger's Mill was changed to Zalma, after railroad worker Zalma Block.[6] Zalma is also said to come from a Native American word meaning "the end." As of the 2010 U.S. Census, Zalma had a population of 122.

Zalma is part of the Cape Girardeau−Jackson, MO-IL Metropolitan Statistical Area. Zalma is home to a number of state parks that feature a number of activities such as deer hunting, fishing, bird watching, horseback riding, and hiking. Blue Pond, the deepest natural pond in the state of Missouri, is located outside of Zalma.

In 1800, an Urban Asherbranner (or Asherbramer or Asherbrauner) settled on the upper portion of the Castor River, just where the river empties its waters into Mingo Bottom, and where the village of Zalma is now situated, built a log and brush dam and erected a water mill to grind corn. Philip Bollinger settled nearby.[6][7]

Windsor, Missouri

Windsor was laid out in 1855, and originally known as Belmont.[6] Its named was changed to Windsor in 1859, after Windsor Castle, in England.[7] A post office called Windsor has been in operation since 1850.[8]

The city is located in northeast Henry County and extends to the northeast into the southwest corner of Pettis County. It is at the intersection of Missouri routes 52 and 2. Clinton is 16 miles to the southwest, Warrensburg is about 18 miles to the northwest and Sedalia is approximately 18 miles to the northeast. The east fork of Tebo Creek flows past the west side of the city.[9]

As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 2,901 people, 1,193 households, and 781 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,198.8 inhabitants per square mile (462.9/km2). There were 1,381 housing units at an average density of 570.7 per square mile (220.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 96.8% White, 0.1% African American, 1.1% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 0.1% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.0% of the population.

Zanoni, Missouri

Zanoni is an unincorporated community located in Ozark County, Missouri, on Route 181 about ten miles northeast of Gainesville. A watermill (doubling as a bed and breakfast) and a post office are all that remain of the community. The community was founded in 1898 and was named for the novel Zanoni by Edward Bulwer-Lytton.[2] The mill was built in 1905 as an overshot wheel mill by "Doc" Morrison and restored by his grandson.[3]

The mill is located where the Zanoni Spring arises from openings in the Roubidoux Formation, an Ordovician unit of mixed sandstone and dolostone.[4] The spring discharges at the base of a ridge above Pine Creek, a tributary of Caney Creek which discharges into Bryant Creek just above its intersection with North Fork River and Norfork Lake.[1] The discharge of the spring is 0.8 cubic feet per second (0.023 m3/s) or 500,000 US gallons (1,900,000 l) per day.[4]

Windyville, Missouri

Windyville is an unincorporated community in Dallas County, Missouri, United States.[1] It is located approximately ten miles northeast of Buffalo along Missouri routes K and MM. The Niangua River flows past to the south and east of the community.[2] It is part of the Springfield, Missouri Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Winfield, Missouri

On June 18, 2008, floodwaters opened a 150-foot breach in a primary levee along the Mississippi River in Winfield.[8] The breach allowed floodwaters to claim dozens of homes and large tracts of farmland and put pressure on a secondary levee. The breach also prompted Lincoln County emergency officials to order the evacuation of residents east of Winfield. Press reports noted that some evacuees were being housed at the local high school.[8]

On April 9, 2009, Winfield made news around both the USA and the rest of the world[9] after it elected their popular mayor, Harry Stonebraker, to a fourth term, several weeks after he died of a heart attack. This was because ballot papers had already been printed and absentee voting had begun. He won by a landslide, securing 90% of the vote by April 9.

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 1,404 people, 525 households, and 360 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,193.8 inhabitants per square mile (847.0/km2). There were 568 housing units at an average density of 887.5 per square mile (342.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.0% White, 0.4% African American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.9% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.

Missouri Route 11

Route 11 is a highway in the northern part of the U.S. state of Missouri. Its northern terminus is at Route 15 near Baring; its southern terminus is at U.S. Route 24 west of Brunswick. The northern half of the route runs more east–west than north–south.
