Trade Schools Online

Whitmore Lake MI student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Whitmore Lake MI students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. Even though learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a degree or certificate, it might not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For example, learning to operate a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training can be appropriate for online classes, for example learning safety and driving regulations for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Some programs will combine online education with on campus lab work, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to ask before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training allocated to the syllabus. One means to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online education and provides comprehensive practical training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for online training, it can be a convenient way for individuals with time constraints to learn a new vocation.

What to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Whitmore Lake MI trade schoolsOnce you have picked the trade and type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, either on campus or online, you can begin to limit your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are a large number of technical schools in the  Whitmore Lake MI area and across the United States to pick from. That’s why it is essential to have a checklist of relevant qualifications when making school evaluations. As formerly stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the initial two factors you will consider. Following are several additional ones that you will want to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Whitmore Lake MI area vocational programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Confirm that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you obtain a quality education, it can help in securing financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, some states mandate that the  training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help evaluate the quality of a trade school near Whitmore Lake MI is how long it has been in operation. A negatively ranked or a fly by night school usually will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to begin from their first day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate could indicate that students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. It may also indicate that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help students acquire apprenticeships or employment in the Whitmore Lake MI area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many training programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or trade unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have referring relationships with Whitmore Lake MI area professionals in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by supplying practical training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the tech you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Whitmore Lake MI company if they can give you some suggestions. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Talk to some of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Michigan and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Whitmore Lake MI, verify that the schools you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.
