Online Vocational Schools

Earlington KY student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Earlington KY students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. Even though learning online is a readily available and practical way to earn a degree or certificate, it may not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For instance, training to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be suitable for online training, for example learning safety and driving regulations for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will combine online education with on campus practical training, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to find out before choosing an online program for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training allocated to the syllabus. One means to help establish est that a vocational school program is both suitable for online learning and provides in-depth hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for online training, it can be a practical way for individuals with limited time to acquire a new trade.

Accredited.  Numerous Earlington KY area technical programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for instance HVAC technology. How Long in Business? One clue to help measure the quality of a vocational school near Earlington KY is how long it has been in operation. A negatively rated or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to begin from their first day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate may signify that students were unhappy with the course and dropped out. It may also suggest that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist grads acquire apprenticeships or employment in the Earlington KY area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous trade programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or trade unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Earlington KY area companies in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by supplying practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the specialist you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Earlington KY contracting company if they can provide some suggestions. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there might be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Talk with a few of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Kentucky and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Earlington KY, confirm that the programs you are looking at offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.

    Earlington, Kentucky

Founded in 1870 by the St. Bernard Coal Co., Earlington was named a year later upon its incorporation for John Baylis Earle, the man who stuck the first pick into the hillside at the opening of Hopkins County's first commercial coal mine. Earle was a lawyer who was central to developing the coal industry in the region.[4] Shortly after the town was founded, the Louisville and Nashville Railroad completed its line from Henderson to Earlington, and became the primary hauler in the area. The town boomed as both a coal center and as the center of L&N operations on the Evansville line.

The early development of Earlington can most readily be credited to St. Bernard Coal Company’s second president, John B. Atkinson. Originally from New Jersey, Atkinson taught school before becoming a civil engineer. He relocated to Kentucky from Boston in 1871 to take charge of mining operations at Earlington and eventually became president of the company.

Because of his background in education, Atkinson placed a great deal of emphasis on schools in Earlington, and modern buildings for each the grade schools and high schools were built and furnished at the expense of St. Bernard. Other amenities offered at Earlington included housing, a library, an arboretum, and churches. [5] Unusual for Western Kentucky at the time was the firm's electric generating plant, which made Earlington one of the first fully electrified towns in the region.
