Online Trade Schools

Portis KS student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Portis KS students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. Even though online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a degree or certificate, it might not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For example, learning to drive a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training can be suitable for online learning, for instance studying safety and driving regulations for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Some programs will blend online instruction with on-campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to find out before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training allocated to the course of study. One means to help establish est that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online education and delivers comprehensive practical training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a convenient way for individuals with time constraints to learn a new trade.

Points to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Portis KS trade schoolsWhen you have chosen the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you want to attain, either online or on campus, you can start to limit your selection of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are many trade schools in the  Portis KS area and all over the USA to select from. That’s why it is imperative to have a list of key qualifiers when making school assessments. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the initial 2 variables you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you should explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Portis KS area trade schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Make certain that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you receive a quality education, it can assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, many states require that the  training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help evaluate the quality of a trade school near Portis KS is how long it has been in business. A negatively rated or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to start from their opening day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate may indicate that students were disappointed with the course and dropped out. It may also indicate that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s also important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help students secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Portis KS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many technical programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Portis KS area professionals in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the tech you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Portis KS company if they can provide some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there might be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak with a few of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Kansas and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Portis KS, check that the programs you are considering provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.
