Learning a Trade Online

Plainfield IA student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Plainfield IA students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. While online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For instance, learning to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be suitable for online classes, for example studying driving and safety guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will combine online instruction with on campus lab work, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to ask before enrolling in an online program for any vocation if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training allocated to the syllabus. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online education and delivers in-depth hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for training online, it can be a convenient way for individuals with time constraints to learn a new vocation.

Things to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Plainfield IA trade schoolsOnce you have decided on the trade and type of certificate or degree that you wish to attain, either on campus or online, you can begin to limit your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are a large number of trade schools in the  Plainfield IA area and all over the United States to choose from. That’s why it is very important to have a list of relevant qualifiers when making school assessments. As formerly stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will undoubtedly be the first two variables you will consider. Following are several additional ones that you will want to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Plainfield IA area trade programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for instance HVAC technology. Verify that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you acquire an excellent education, it can help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, a number of states mandate that the  training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help assess the quality of a trade school near Plainfield IA is how long it has been in business. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school usually will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to begin from their first day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate might suggest that students were dissatisfied with the course and dropped out. It might also suggest that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist students secure apprenticeships or employment in the Plainfield IA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of training programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or trade unions. Check if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with Plainfield IA area professionals in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by furnishing practical training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the specialist you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Plainfield IA contractor if they can give you some tips. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Speak to some of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Iowa and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Plainfield IA, verify that the schools you are looking at offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family emergencies.
