Learning a Vocation Online

Saint Marks FL student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Saint Marks FL students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. Even though learning online is a readily available and practical way to earn a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be appropriate for online education, for example learning driving and safety regulations for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Some programs will blend online education with on-campus lab work, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is essential to determine before choosing an online school for any trade if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training allocated to the course of study. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online education and delivers comprehensive hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for training online, it can be a practical way for individuals with time constraints to acquire a new vocation.

What to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Saint Marks FL trade schoolsWhen you have chosen the trade and type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, either on campus or online, you can start to narrow down your list of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are a large number of technical schools in the  Saint Marks FL area and across the Country to select from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a checklist of key qualifications when making school comparisons. As previously stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the first 2 variables you will consider. Following are several additional ones that you should explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Saint Marks FL area technical programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Make sure that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you acquire an excellent education, it can help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, many states require that the  training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help measure the quality of a vocational school near Saint Marks FL is how long it has been in operation. A poorly rated or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so use it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate might indicate that students were unhappy with the course and quit. It may also signify that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help students secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Saint Marks FL area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many vocational programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of businesses or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have working relationships with Saint Marks FL area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the technician you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Saint Marks FL contracting company if they can give you some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there can be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Talk with some of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Florida and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Saint Marks FL, confirm that the schools you are comparing offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family issues.
