However with so many vocational schools to select from, just how do you approach locating the best one? Not only do you need to ascertain that you will receive the comprehensive training necessary to succeed in your new field, but also that the school is reputable and well regarded. Or they may be attracted to the one that has the lowest tuition. Naturally the cost and location of the programs are critical considerations when evaluating vocational school options, but they must not be the only ones. Added variables including accreditation and the reputation of the schools are important as well. So before you begin evaluating and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions you should be asking in order to get the information to make a final selection. We will cover a few of those questions shortly in this post. But first, let’s talk about some of the vocation options that are available as well as the availability of online schools.

Learning a Trade Online

Granby CO student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become more attractive with Granby CO students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. Although online learning is a readily available and practical way to acquire a degree or certificate, it might not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For instance, training to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be suitable for online classes, for instance learning safety and driving regulations for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will blend online instruction with on-campus lab work, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to find out before choosing an online program for any vocation if there is a suitable amount of practical training devoted to the course of study. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online learning and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for online training, it can be a convenient way for students with time constraints to learn a new profession.

Concerns to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Granby CO trade schoolsAs soon as you have chosen the trade and type of degree or certificate that you desire to attain, either online or on campus, you can start to decrease your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are numerous trade schools in the  Granby CO area and all over the USA to select from. That’s why it is very important to have a list of key qualifiers when making school comparisons. As earlier stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the initial 2 factors you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you should explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Numerous Granby CO area vocational schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Make sure that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you receive an excellent education, it can assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited programs. Additionally, a number of states mandate that the  training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help determine the quality of a vocational school near Granby CO is how long it has been in business. A poorly rated or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to start from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate may signify that students were disappointed with the course and dropped out. It may also indicate that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help grads obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Granby CO area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many trade programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating technical and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or trade unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have referring partnerships with Granby CO area professionals in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the tech you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Granby CO contracting company if they can provide some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak to several of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Colorado and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Granby CO, confirm that the programs you are considering provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family emergencies.
