However with so many trade schools to pick from, exactly how do you go about identifying the best one? Not only do you have to make sure that you will get the complete training required to be successful in your new field, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. A number of prospective students make the error of choosing a vocational school simply because the campus is nearest to their residence or place of employment. Others might be attracted to the one that has the lowest tuition. Naturally the location and cost of the programs are important considerations when evaluating vocational school options, but they can not be the sole ones. Additional considerations such as reputation and accreditation of the schools are important also. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you must know what questions to ask in order to get the information to make a final choice. We will cover several of those questions later in this article. But first, let’s talk about a few of the trade options that are available as well as the availability of online schools.

Online Trade Schools

Woodlake CA student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Woodlake CA students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. Although online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, learning to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be suitable for online learning, such as studying driving and safety guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will combine online education with on-campus lab work, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to determine before enrolling in an online program for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training devoted to the curriculum. One means to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online studying and provides in-depth practical training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for online training, it can be a practical way for individuals with limited time to acquire a new profession.

What to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Woodlake CA trade schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, either on campus or online, you can start to decrease your selection of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are a large number of trade schools in the  Woodlake CA area and all over the USA to pick from. That’s why it is essential to have a list of relevant qualifications when making school evaluations. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will probably be the first 2 aspects you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you will want to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Woodlake CA area trade schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Make certain that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you receive an excellent education, it can help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Also, a number of states mandate that the  training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help measure the quality of a trade school near Woodlake CA is how long it has been in business. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so use it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate may suggest that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It may also mean that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist students secure apprenticeships or employment in the Woodlake CA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of technical programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with Woodlake CA area companies in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Woodlake CA company if they can provide some pointers. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak with a few of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in California and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Woodlake CA, check that the programs you are reviewing offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family issues.
